Key highlights

SavannaX speeds up and simplifies lifecycle management for Toppi's IT decision maker. The service helps the organization to extend device lifespan and keep the budget under control. Toppi also operates more responsibly by reducing electronic waste and CO₂ emissions.

Two months after launching and implementing SavannaX, we asked Toppi's IT Manager, Juhani Levänen, and Sustainability Manager, Mia Adams, for their thoughts on the service.

1. What challenges did you face earlier in device lifecycle management, and how did SavannaX solve these challenges?

Juhani: We already had an analytics tool, but it lacked clear interpretation of the data as well as readily available recommended actions. While data was available, we had to dig into each device individually to figure out what to do with it. SavannaX speeds up and simplifies the process by providing me with a view where I can see recommended actions for all devices at a glance.

2. You already had a device agent in place. How does SavannaX differ from just having an agent?

Juhani: Just as mentioned above. I now get all the data in one consolidated view. Our agent retrieves the data, SavannaX analyzes it and generates a data-based summary with the recommended actions – all of this used to be my responsibility.

3. What new features would be useful for you?

Juhani: If I could pre-order the necessary parts for the devices, it would make things much easier for me. For example, ordering replacement batteries directly through SavannaX. If this functionality existed, I would definitely use it. A return/dispose option with responsible post-processing would also be a valuable addition.

4. What benefits have you discovered from using SavannaX that you hadn't expected?

Juhani: Expectations were high from the start because we had had a thorough discussion about our needs. I knew what to expect from the purchase, partially thanks to good sales work.

5. What are the biggest benefits for the IT Manager and the Sustainability Manager?

Juhani: Managing device lifecycles is my top priority. I don't want to replace computers on a fixed schedule, like every three years, if they're still working well. We try to use our devices for as long as they remain reliable. SavannaX gives me a clear view of when a replacement is truly needed. This supports proper lifecycle management and keeps the budget in check.

Mia: The service helps us to avoid unnecessary waste. If it in addition provided electricity consumption data, that would be useful, though marginal. We also reduce CO₂ emissions by extending the lifecycle of the devices.

6. Was there anything SavannaX didn't meet your expectations on?

Juhani: Nothing in particular comes to mind. The service was thoroughly explained, and I knew what to expect. I'm looking forward to seeing what new features SavannaX will have. We'll gladly make use of anything new that becomes available.

Background information

Toppi and SwanIT began working together in early 2022 when Toppi adopted SwanIT's sustainable circular economy model for IT device procurement. The principle was the same back then as it's now: sustainability should be implemented concretely in all operations, including IT. SwanIT was the first to offer a truly circular economy based IT service model for device procurement, making the choice easy. The partnership continues today, and Toppi was among the first customers to adopt our data-driven lifecycle service, SavannaX.

About Oy Toppi Ab

Toppi is a Finnish family-owned company and industry pioneer since 1953. Their recognitions for quality and sustainability include:

  • ISO 14001 Environmental Certification since 2021

  • ISO 9001 Quality Certification since 2017

  • Key Flag Symbol since 2023, meaning all manufacturing is done in Finland

As an innovative and agile player, Toppi is capable of quickly advancing with sustainability initiatives. As a good example of this, they launched industrial CO₂ calculations and completed them within a year using standard protocols. The calculations for Scopes 1 and 2 are already done, and Scope 3 will follow next year.

Purchasing decisions can have a significant impact on sustainability, and Toppi sources its raw materials from Europe whenever possible, as suppliers in Europe tend to follow strong environmental and ethical labor principles. The company also actively searches for and tests recycled materials in production - some products are already made from recycled resources. Any raw material waste generated in manufacturing is reused whenever feasible. Other key elements in Toppi's sustainability metrics include monitoring CO₂ emissions and water consumption, as well as using carbon-free electricity. Going forward, the company plans to involve its stakeholders even more closely in the development of its sustainability strategy.
